Caged and Adored

But my girls love him
Reminding them of our cat
Same coloring
Both take naps

But there’s not enough room
The jaguars can’t run
As they sit baked in the sun

Driving home I remember
We feed and trap
Our house cats in a house larger
Than the cage of the wolf

Our backyard larger than the leopard’s
As we watched him
In the metal box try and relax
Painted desert camouflage
For his habitat

Let’s not talk about the giraffe
The mother so angry with visitors
We were warned three times
She bites, so step back

The birds with wings snipped
Legs chained to poles
The great bald eagle trapped

Such beautiful animals
My children adored
As my conscious explored
The freedoms I ignore
